Carte Blanche offer workshop classes for both the professional painter and artist and the DIY and leisure painter.

Our workshop in Perth is usually busy with projects and this is where painters, artists and clients old and new can learn at first hand how to recreate some of the finishes currently supplied by the Carte Blanche team of professionals. At Carte Blanche you can purchase paints, tools and materials required to carry out the work.

Cait Whitson who teaches most of our classes has been involved in the decorative arts since 1985. She trained in London at Leonard Pardon’s School for Specialist Decoration and then latterly at the late Bill Holgate’s school. Cait continues to regularly takes classes to improve her skills and most recently has had the chance to learn from Gert-Jan Nijsse and Christian Martincourt and Annie Sloan.
Cait has taught at art colleges, technical colleges and at private faux finishing schools both here and internationally.

Cait and Gibson are working professionals which means the teaching is practical, commercial and realistic. They teach small groups in a way that enables students to grow in their ability after they have left the class.

Graining and Marbling

In this economy, it’s the decorative specialist that can display not only talent but the ability to tackle complex jobs with confidence that has a full diary.

Graining and Marbling are the traditional decorators skills of imitating natural stone and timber. There is a strong tradition of graining and marbling in the UK and it is our intention to help decorators, decorative painters and artists learn the skills and techniques and understand the modern water based materials that are used to achieve this. The class is aimed at beginners and those who may have been taught or used these techniques in the past but wants to brush up and get accustomed to acrylic glazes

Students will be guided with personal attention through techniques that will broaden the skill base and give confidence to tackle most woods and marbles.

First class is an introduction to marbling and graining led by Cait Whitson, this will be a great way to familiarise yourself with techniques and materials and will be taught in water based materials. The finishes taught will be white veined marble, Portoro marble and Sienna marble, the woods will be pine, mahogany and walnut

The second part of the course will happen over the weekend and will highlight the work of 2 visiting tutors - Jeremy Taylor and Roy Makin. On Saturday we will carry out a Vert de Mer marble under the tuition of Roy and an Oak panel under the tuition of Jeremy. On Sunday you will learn to apply a trompe loeil moulding to one of the panels with Jeremy and Cait will teach crotch mahogany,

Cost - £265 each class - £495 for both

Our graining and marbling class is split into 2 different sessions of 2 days each. You can book one or both; one feeds into the other but if you feel you only need to concentrate on one area you are free to come to just one.

Cost includes sample panels, notes, lunch and refreshments each day. All materials are supplied however we do ask that you bring your own brushes, please email ( us for a brush list. There are a number of brushes that are available on loan but these must be requested on booking
